Relaunch! Stagnation, Change, and Renewal in Mid-Career and Beyond by Steven Simon, Ph.D.
Rating: 5 of 5 stars
Book Summary:
RELAUNCH! is about finding or renewing a sense of passion for a career or job. It’s about the antidotes to stagnating in a job or career you don’t love or even like, or find boring day in and day out.
The book is based on listening to what mid and late career clients have confided as their most pressing and distressing issues regarding jobs and careers, and how we have attempted to help them restore or find for the first time a new love for the work they do.
If you have struggled with decisions about making a change, or have been unable to find the right job….or any job, then this is the book for you. If you can’t stand the work you are doing or who you work for, and need a change for the better, then this book is for you. If you are so discouraged about your job search that you are at wit’s end, then this book is for you. If you are in crisis about what to do about a disability or illness that may end your career or job you love, and your finances will be stressed to the breaking point, then this book is for you. If you are on the cusp of retirement, but are not ready to give up the passion and meaning the right job can provide, then this book is for you. And finally, if your emotions have prevented you from getting the satisfaction and meaning you could from your work, this book is for you.
It will show you what you are missing and the way to find or regain job passion and meaning in your life. Dr. Steven Simon has used his almost 50 years of experience in studying and helping those with difficult career issues, combined with his advanced academic training in career counseling and psychology, to write this groundbreaking work. It’s not simply a compendium of research but rather a summary of the experiences of Dr. Simon’s life’s work in his field. If you are in mid or late career, you will identify with the issues and find it an eyeopener to how you can improve your own life’s work.
Book Review:
This book is a wonderful resource for mid career and senior professionals. I was surprised to see how engaging this book was, considering it’s a topic that is often difficult to write well.
There were many examples and descriptions in the book, which made it easier for the reader to understand the context of the topics being discussed. When one sees real life examples for situations, one is more likely to relate and understand. The author has done an outstanding job of making situations seem like they can be overcome with a streamlined effort, making the process less scary for people who are contemplating the best way to take the next step in their careers.
The author has done a great job of writing all the content in a very easy to understand manner, and the division of topics has also been done very well. The book is divided into parts, and those parts are further divided into chapters. Each part covers a broad topic relevant to mid life career change, and each chapter covers a particular pain point.
It has been wonderfully constructed and you can see that a lot of thought has gone into figuring out what order to place the topics in. Some chapters have also been co-authored by people who have experience in those fields.
The author himself has many years of experience in career counseling and helping people transition into their next great role. His years of knowledge and experience have been condensed into this volume, and he gives actionable tips and pointers.
There are also exercises in the book, which if done faithfully, will set you on path to figuring things out for yourself.
All in all, this is a wonderful resource and I highly recommend this book for professionals at any stage of their career.
Though the author is US based, I believe this can be a resource for people in any country around the world, so do not think that this book would not be applicable if you are in different regions.
There are many examples and I’m sure you will be able to identify, and either way, the exercises that are outlined would be great for anyone to do. In fact, even if you aren’t mid career but still contemplating a career move, this book is recommended reading.
