The Fifth Letter by Nicola Moriarty
Rating: 4 of 5 stars
Book Review:
A tale of how quickly and easily things can spiral into utter tragedy. Four friends on their annual holiday, and things quickly go from fun to mistrust to outright intent to harm.
This was my first book by this author and I am really looking forward to reading more of her work. If this is any indication, the rest of her stuff is going to be pretty kick-ass too.
Lately, I’ve started reading a lot of stuff that makes your pulse quicken a tad bit, just in anticipation. This book does it for me. The characters were well etched out, but still it was pretty hard to figure out who wrote the fifth letter. One more thing that kept me wondering was that I was trying to figure out whether Joni was an unreliable narrator or not. I’m not telling you, though!
I breezed through this book in just two days, but I must say it held my attention more than most. I was paying special attention to nuances in description and conversation between the four friends in order to find out who was the one that authored that scary letter. And when you write a book where the reader tends to scrutinise sentences for motives and giveaways, you need to be a damn good writer.
I’m happy to say that Ms. Moriarty did it very very well.
