George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl
Rating: 4 of 5 stars
Book Review:
Another classic Dahl book for kids. I’m seeing a pattern though – things that were funny when we were kids take on surprisingly cruel undertones as we grow up and re-read. That makes me wonder – are kids naive or cruel? Or both?
George’s medicine WAS marvelous, but come on we know it wasn’t medicine. George did accidentally create magic but he wasn’t trying to make something to make Grandma better. He put shoe polish in it. The grandma was creepy but did she deserve a potion made with shampoo and lotion?
And nobody thought there was anything wrong with letting Grandma hang out there with her head sticking out of the attic? They just let her be.
Oh, and his dad was smarter than he let on.
Maybe don’t give this to your kids if they do find their relatives odious. It isn’t to be emulated.
It’s a fun story though.
