The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is a classic Agatha Christie – unreliable characters everywhere, and misdirection abounds!
Book Blurb:
Considered to be one of Agatha Christie’s most controversial mysteries, The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd breaks the rules of traditional mystery.
The peaceful English village of King’s Abbot is stunned. The widow Ferrars dies from an overdose of veronal. Not twenty-four hours later, Roger Ackroyd—the man she had planned to marry—is murdered. It is a baffling case involving blackmail and death, that taxes Hercule Poirot’s “grey cells” before he reaches one of the most startling conclusions of his career.
Book Review:
Nice quick story that reminds me I haven’t picked up a Christie in so long, and I really miss reading the genius work of her creative mind. As always, a Christie review on this blog is less of a review and more of an appreciation post, so why would this be any different? That is also why Christie reviews on here aren’t very long. There is no exposition about plot, pacing, or characters. Because there’s no need. Christie is and always will be perfect, in my opinion.
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is a classic Agatha Christie – unreliable characters everywhere, and misdirection abounds! This book was quite controversial when it first came out, for reasons that are absolute spoilers and hence I will definitely not be getting into.
The small clues that confuse you – the same ones that Poirot emphasizes on – show up yet again, making you wonder how you could be Hastings level dense but there you go – you are, and you enjoy the story anyway, just as much as you would have if you’d managed to guess or decipher what Poirot was talking about. Which, if you did, then hats off to you. You’re a much better detective than I, and many more who were outraged when this book released.
I need to get back to reading more Christie.
