Book Review:
What a beautiful book! I adored it absolutely, and Tiffy and Leon were just wonderfully written, real people who I wanted to keep reading about.
I love Sophie Kinsella and Cecelia Ahern and was looking for others in the same category, but it’s a high bar to live up to. No other chick lit author really did it for me the way they did. Till now. Beth O’Leary has really made a name for herself, and carved out her own space in the genre, with this book, and it’s her debut! I was so excited to find something I loved this much.
However, this book isn’t just a light, fun chick lit read. I love those too, obviously, but this one addresses more things outside that purview. There is mention of emotional abuse and gaslighting and that may be a trigger for some readers, so this is just here as a PSA.
Having said that, I appreciated how Tiffy and Leon got to talking with each other and those Post-It notes they kept leaving around the house for each other. I also loved every character in the ensemble cast, however small or large a role they played in the story. Gerty, Mo, Rachel, Richie, Holly, Katherin and everyone else was just fantastic. I often find the secondary characters quite one-dimensional in many books, but O’Leary created something special.
Alternately, chapters are told from Tiffy’s and Leon’s point of view. So we switch between both POVs, which adds more depth to the story, in my opinion.
An exceptional book. I look forward to her next book, which is supposed to come out spring 2020.
